Post-Adoption Depression
June Bond first coined the term “Post-Adoption Depression Syndrome”(PADS), in the spring 1995 issue of “Roots & Wings” Magazine. In 1999, Harriet McCarthy, an adoptive mother who experienced PADS herself, conducted some exploratory research. From an on-line survey of 145 parents, who adopted internationally, over 65% reported Post-Adoption Depression.
Symptoms
-feelings of sadness or worthlessness
-sleeping too much or too little
-changes in appetite
-intense anxiety/insecurity
-feelings of guilt and shame
-irritability and possible anger outbursts
-thoughts of harming self and/or baby
-feelings of loss of self
Post-Adoption Depression can have an onset that varies. It can last a short time or for years. There are also remissions and reoccurrences.
